The New York City Opera proudly welcomes Constantine Orbelian as its new Executive Director and Music Director, stepping in after Michael Capasso. Esteemed as a four-time Grammy-nominated conductor, Orbelian’s career is noteworthy, marked by collaborations with top vocal talents including Renee Fleming, Sondra Radvanovsky, and Lawrence Brownlee, as well as the late great Dmitri Hvorostovsky. His previous roles have been illustrious as well, serving as Music Director for both the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonia of Russia, and founding the Palaces of St. Petersburg International Music Festival.

Orbelian’s remarkable journey also reads as a historical milestone, as he was the first American to be appointed music director of a Russian ensemble. His rich international experience is set to enhance the New York City Opera’s 2024-25 season, which promises an exciting lineup. This season is particularly special as it features the revival of William Grant Still’s “Troubled Island,” 75 years following its initial premiere.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Orbelian shares, “I am honored and excited to take on the role of Executive Director in addition to my current role as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the New York City Opera, a company with a rich legacy and profound history in the world of music. This opportunity allows me to blend my passion for artistic excellence with mindful and positive stewardship, ensuring that the cherished traditions of this great institution continue to thrive. Together with this wonderful community, we will embark on a journey that honors the past while boldly shaping the future of this iconic opera company.”
