Trader Joe’s is urgently recalling about 653,000 Mango Tangerine Scented Candles nationwide due to “safety risk” from an “unexpected burn pattern,” the company announced Thursday.

According to a notice published by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the candle flame can spread from the wick to the wax, causing a larger flame than expected and “posing a fire hazard.”

The 5.7-ounce recalled candles, sold in June 2024, have white-colored wax with a cotton wick in a tin container and an SKU number 56879 on the bottom.

Candles cause 5,910 home fires each year nationwide, according to the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association.

Those who have purchased that specific candle are urged not to use it and to either discard the product or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full cash refund of $4.

Customers can also complete a form online to receive a $4 Trader Joe’s gift card by mail, though will they receive a response from Customer Relations requesting a receipt or a photo of the candle.

Though the official recall date issued by the CPSC is Thursday, August 15, the Trader Joe’s website states it was initially recalled in June, but it does not specify how many were sold or if there were any incident reports.

Meanwhile, the CPSC reported that there were 14 reported incidents of high flames, including three reports of minor property damage and two reports of minor burns.
