Just hours after a traffic incident outside Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was still trying to process the chaotic events before his team’s season opener. Despite the unsettling experience, Hill went on to play a crucial role in Miami’s 20-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, even scoring an 80-yard touchdown.
“Right now, I’m still trying to put it all together,” Hill said postgame. “I’m not going to give you my version. I still don’t know what happened. I want to use this platform to say, ‘What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?’ Like worst-case scenario. It’s crazy.”
Hill was ticketed for a traffic violation and detained by police outside the stadium. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, expressed concern about Hill’s treatment. Eyewitnesses, including defensive lineman Calais Campbell, described the use of “excessive force.”
Miami-Dade Police Department director Stephanie Daniels announced an Internal Affairs investigation and stated that one officer involved had been placed on administrative duties during the review. Rosenhaus emphasized the need to ensure Hill wasn’t mistreated.
Released in time to contribute significantly to the game, Hill celebrated his touchdown by mimicking his detainment, highlighting a complex mix of relief and ongoing reflection. “I have a lot of respect for cops,” Hill noted. “But obviously, everybody has bad apples. … I want to use this platform to figure out a way to flip this and make it a positive on both ends.”
Hill, who led the NFL in receiving yards and touchdowns last season, continues to be a game-changing asset for the Dolphins, forming a fearsome duo with Jaylen Waddle. He recently agreed to a restructured contract ensuring $106.5 million over the next four years.
