CHICAGO — Soldier Field was buzzing with excitement as Chicago Bears fans sought the dawn of a new era. Yet, what they witnessed was a nostalgic throwback—a gritty, defensive clash reminiscent of the classic “Da Bears” days. The result? A 24-17 opening victory over the Tennessee Titans, fueled by stalwart defense and special teams, without much offensive flair.

Caleb Williams’ much-anticipated NFL debut showcased the challenges faced by rookie quarterbacks. Completing 14-of-29 passes for 93 yards, Williams avoided turnovers and kept the Bears in the game, capitalizing on an opportunistic defense and strong special teams play.

“Obviously, great to get this first win,” Williams said, reflecting on the victory with an understanding that improvements are necessary. Despite the lack of offensive productivity—148 total yards and no touchdowns—Williams’ composure impressed head coach Matt Eberflus, who praised his calm demeanor and belief in the team.

Throughout the game, Williams struggled with accuracy, often missing receivers, but he maintained his confidence. His mindset and poise are reasons the Bears selected him No. 1 overall, even if the performance showed he’s still adjusting to the NFL’s pace.

Chicago’s win was sealed by their defensive prowess. Jaylon Johnson’s game-clinching interception epitomized a second-half defensive masterclass, holding Tennessee scoreless and forcing multiple turnovers. The Bears’ first touchdown came via a blocked punt, and another through a pick-six by Tyrique Stevenson, underscoring their defensive dominance.

“We’re a team full of dogs,” Stevenson stated, acknowledging that the offense will eventually contribute more significantly to their success. While the Bears’ offense continues to find its footing, their defense remains their foundation.

With a demanding training camp behind him, Williams expressed optimism about his growth and the team’s future, celebrating their gritty win and eagerly anticipating greater contributions.
