Brewers shortstop Willy Adames admitted to exchanging words with Jesse Winker during the Mets’ Game 1 win in the NL Wild Card Series. The interaction, which occurred in the top of the second inning, was provoked by Winker after hitting a game-tying triple.

Adames, surprised by the altercation with his former Brewers teammate, stated, “I don’t know what was going through his head, but he just started saying some stuff. I just said something back. That’s just the kind of player he is. It is what it is.” ESPN’s cameras captured the exchange, showing Winker chirping from third base and Adames firing back.

A Jomboy Media breakdown suggested Winker taunted, “[What do you] wanna do about it?” with Adames responding, “I’ll let you know in the parking lot after the game.”

Winker refrained from elaborating on the incident, stating, “I don’t really want to speak on it, I just want to focus on the game tomorrow.”

Reflecting on the situation with a smirk, Adames commented, “That was surprising that he was saying some stuff. I guess that’s part of his personality. It was just a little bit of a surprise to me, but we don’t back off.”

Adames and Winker were teammates on last year’s Brewers team. The Mets’ victory positioned them one win away from advancing to the NLDS against the Phillies.
