A’ja Wilson Shatters Records in an Unforgettable 2024 WNBA Season
At the end of the 2023 WNBA season, the Las Vegas Aces celebrated their second consecutive title with A’ja Wilson securing the Finals MVP trophy. During the championship rally, Wilson addressed her critics with a confident message: “Whoever you are out there that voted me fourth (for MVP), thank you,” she said. “Thank you so much. I appreciate you, ’cause that just means that I got a lot more work to do.”
Despite the Aces falling short of expectations in 2024, Wilson has delivered on her promise to return stronger. In her seventh WNBA season, Wilson has not only earned multiple accolades, including two MVP titles and a Defensive Player of the Year award, but she has also made history by setting the record for the most points scored in a single season. In a game against the Indiana Fever, Wilson surpassed Jewell Loyd’s 2023 record by scoring her 941st point.
The WNBA’s regular season has extended to 40 games, but Wilson’s achievements stand out even without the extra games. After 34 games, she amassed 929 points, outpacing Diana Taurasi’s record of 860 points set in 2006. With an average of 27.3 points entering the final stretch, Wilson needs just 83 more points over five games to break the highest-scoring average in WNBA history, currently held by Taurasi at 25.3.
But Wilson’s excellence extends beyond scoring. She leads the league in defensive rebounds, blocks, turnover percentage, and win shares, solidifying her status as the runaway MVP favorite. Aces coach Becky Hammon praised Wilson’s all-around game: “She just does it all. She’s in the middle of a run that sometimes I want to shake her and say, do you know how good you are? But then I don’t want to shake her because I don’t want to wake her up.”
In just seven seasons, Wilson is already closing in on Taurasi’s all-time scoring record, with a higher scoring average and the advantage of more games per season due to the WNBA’s expanded schedule. Although the primary focus for Wilson and the Aces remains securing a third title, her journey is simultaneously carving a path through the league’s record books.
