In an eye-opening revelation, Pavel Durov, CEO of the popular messaging app Telegram, has openly admitted that the platform has been cooperating with global authorities by sharing user data to help curb criminal activities. Despite facing charges in France over allegations of aiding in child pornography among other serious accusations through his platform’s lax content moderation policies, Durov emphasizes that Telegram’s commitment to privacy and freedom remains undiluted. This comes amid accusations pointing towards Durov for the rise of criminal misuse within the app.
Durov clarifies that Telegram’s practices of disclosing user information like IP addresses and phone numbers to authorities on receipt of lawful requests have been in action since 2018. This is part of his broader defense against the French government’s claims accusing him personally for criminal activities conducted on Telegram. He contests the use of outdated laws to target innovators, positioning himself as being unfairly singled out. Highlighting the legal compliances, Durov shared that Telegram has responded to over 200 and nearly 7,000 legal requests from Brazil and India, respectively, this year alone.
Undeterred, Durov pledges to use this incident as a catalyst for enhancing Telegram’s safeguards against its misuse for criminal activities, stressing the platform’s origin as a protective haven against corrupt government and corporate powers. Despite acknowledging the challenges brought on by the app’s growing user base, Durov is determined to maintain the delicate balance between user privacy and compliance with legal standards.
Durov’s ordeal with the French authorities landed him under scrutiny, resulting in a four-day interrogation following his detainment at Le Bourget airport outside Paris. Now released on bail, the Russian-born CEO, who also holds French citizenship among others, is required to report to a police station twice weekly as investigations proceed.
This stark admittance by a leading figure in the tech industry brings forth the ongoing dialogue around the need for tech platforms to be responsible gatekeepers in the fight against digital crimes while safeguarding user privacy.
