Forget about snagging an 8 p.m. reservation at Carbone or the Corner Store; scoring a spot at NYC’s top sports bars for Sunday games is now just as tricky. Prime seating for football requires reserving weeks or even months in advance, having insider connections, lining up like it’s a nightclub, or paying thousands for VIP tables.
At Blue Haven South in FiDi, booking two weeks ahead is essential. Its electric atmosphere, featuring dancing, singalongs, servers in jerseys with megaphones, and a diverse, young crowd, has made it a fan favorite. “It’s the best place to watch football in the city,” says Mia Firenze, a regular. Female support for the NFL has surged, thanks largely to figures like Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, with 64% of Gen Z and millennial women now viewing the NFL favorably.
Joe Wernig, a devoted patron, managed to book a table a month and a half in advance and has witnessed the bar’s intense popularity. The bar’s owner, Abby Dowd, receives up to 50 reservation requests daily. Another hotspot, Rocco’s Sports & Recreation, in the West Village debuted in Spring 2023 with upscale amenities and a $1,000 minimum spend for tables. Christine Correa, Rocco’s general manager, notes the high demand often leads to reservations months in advance.
At Rocco’s, patrons enjoy VIP areas with luxe options like espresso martinis and elevated chicken wings. Roy, a visitor from San Francisco, reflected on the high spending requirements but embraced the exclusivity. Popular bars like the Spaniard and White Horse Tavern also see lines stretching out the door, making spontaneous visits a relic of the past.
