Australian field hockey player Tom Craig has been handed a 12-month suspension after allegedly buying cocaine during the Paris Olympics. Hockey Australia’s integrity unit led the investigation, resulting in a ban where the latter six months could be lifted if Craig adheres to behavioural requirements.
This suspension bars the 29-year-old from participating in any Hockey Australia-sanctioned matches, but he retains access to athlete support services. In a statement, Hockey Australia highlighted that Craig must complete mandatory training and education. He remains eligible for selection in the 2025 National Men’s Hockey Squad, ensuring his welfare is prioritized.
Craig was arrested in Paris following Australia’s elimination by the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. He was released without charges but received a warning from a French judge. The incident reportedly involved a cocaine transaction.
Publicly addressing the incident, Craig expressed regret and took full responsibility, apologizing to his family, teammates, and the Australian Olympic community. Craig had previously contributed to Australia’s silver medal win at Tokyo 2020 and gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
