CINCINNATI — Jerod Mayo’s debut as an NFL head coach couldn’t have been more memorable, clinching his first victory with the New England Patriots against the Cincinnati Bengals, 16-10. Despite Mayo’s modest claim of staying even-keeled, quarterback Jacoby Brissett painted a vivid picture of his elation. “Excited, ecstatic, elated, overjoyed,” Brissett said, capturing the essence of Mayo’s emotions.

Mayo acknowledged the significance of this milestone, reminiscing about his family, grandparents, and early coaches who shaped his life, both on and off the field. His rapid postgame remarks echoed his exhilaration.

This win was monumental for the Patriots, defying odds and silencing thousands of Bengals fans. The New England defense stifled Cincinnati’s offense, with standout performances like Christian Gonzalez’s masterful coverage of Ja’Marr Chase proving pivotal.

Starting the season 1-0 is critical for the Patriots, especially in distancing themselves from the towering shadow of Bill Belichick. Yet, Belichick remains a prominent figure, hinting at possible future coaching roles.

Had the Patriots lost, the season could have started on a troublesome note. Instead, Mayo’s team is brimming with confidence, evident in their postgame praises and the collective work leading to this opener.

Center David Andrews highlighted the immense effort put in since the offseason, culminating in this victorious moment.

Brissett, who contributed significantly with his passing, shared emotional moments that day, including a motivational interaction with Mayo that brought him to tears before the game.

Mayo’s belief in running back Rhamondre Stevenson, who delivered a stellar performance with 120 rushing yards, was also evident. Mayo’s earlier challenge to Stevenson to prove his worth paid off brilliantly.

While some may argue that Cincinnati’s missteps played a role, there’s no denying the Patriots’ achievement. Mayo’s first Gatorade shower and game ball signify the start of his journey, now unburdened by any overshadowing legacies.
