0,000 or ,000? Inside UNLV and Matt Sluka’s NIL dispute and what it could mean for college football

On the morning of Sept. 23, UNLV starting quarterback Matthew Sluka delivered a bombshell to offensive coordinator Brennan Marion: the NIL money promised to him had not materialized. Sluka, a Holy Cross graduate transfer, threatened to sit out the rest of the season if the issue wasn’t resolved, preserving his final year of eligibility.

Sluka shared the same news with head coach Barry Odom, who was furious. The team, off to its best start in 40 years, was gearing up to face Fresno State. By that night, Sluka made his decision public on social media, announcing his departure from the team due to unmet commitments.

Under NCAA rules, schools can’t promise NIL deals to recruits, but many do so anyway, risking minimal repercussions due to weak enforcement. Sluka’s father and agent claimed Marion promised $100,000, but UNLV denied any six-figure offer. Despite extensive negotiations, the best UNLV could offer was $3,000 for four months, far from what Sluka expected.

Emails between Sluka’s agent and UNLV’s collective showed no initial mention of the alleged $100,000. Sluka left the team to preserve his eligibility under NCAA redshirt rules. This situation has highlighted the chaotic nature of NIL deals, where false promises and miscommunications are rampant, affecting both players and schools.

UNLV’s collective, Friends of UNLV, stated their overall NIL budget for the football team ranged from $300,000 to $500,000, insufficient for meeting high individual demands. Experts noted that such contractual ambiguities are widespread, with many players and agents operating on mere verbal promises.

NCAA regulations prohibit staff from discussing financial deals directly with players, yet such conversations occur frequently. Experts advise that binding commitments should come from high authorities within the program, not from assistant coaches.

The story underscores the unresolved complexities of NIL regulations, where both players and schools navigate murky waters with no standardized contracts or agent registries, leaving everyone in a precarious position. As the NCAA awaits potential legislative changes and court decisions, the landscape remains uncertain.

Matt Sluka’s case highlights the issues within the NIL framework. After his departure, UNLV continued its historic season, achieving a Top 25 ranking. Meanwhile, Sluka plans to train independently and explore new opportunities, with his father confident he’ll find a great program.
